Description: The intimate and delightful Aga Farmstead is one of the few remaining group farms in Norway. A group farm was the Norwegian version of the central European village. All the buildings were gathered into a group, while the fertile land and surrounding forest were divided into small plots. Each farmer had property rights to several plots of land, which were spread throughout the entire area. This wellplanned system ensured that good and poor plots of land were evenly distributed. When the population increased considerably during the 1800s, the plots, already small, were divided into even smaller pieces for each succeeding generation. This process continued to the extent that in the end, two farmers could each own half of the same apple tree! In order to improve farming operations the system was abolished, and property was thereafter divided in a more practical way. The group farm soon disappeared, too, as each farm was moved onto the newly distributed land. Today the 30 buildings remaining at Aga are listed. At Aga the visitor can find art exhibitions, crafts shops and a special collection of clothing. During the summer concerts are presented, the café is open, and tours are given by knowledgeable guides.
