Description: The English "salmon lords" laid the groundwork for hotel operations in Sandane starting in the mid-1800s. Overnight accommodation had been available since 1829, but in the early years this was a simple coaching inn. Joachim E. Sivertsen expanded it to house a country store and guesthouse. In addition to its role as a meeting place for the "salmon lords", it served as the ticket office for the shipping lines to America. "Sivertsen" was the point of departure for many emigrants on their way to the New World. The oldest section of the hotel was built in 1866, and it was expanded in the classic Swiss chalet style in 1921. These sections have been preserved, and Gloppen Hotel today is a distinctive hotel with historical charm. Some of the lounges are furnished with pieces from the 1800s, which creates a warm, cosy atmosphere. All the common rooms and guest rooms in the old part of the hotel have been renovated, and the materials, colours and furniture have been restored to their original style. At the same time they have been adapted to today's standards of comfort. With its newly built section the hotel has a large capacity for overnight stays, conferences and parties. The hotel is still a meeting place for salmon fishers on their quest for salmon in the Gloppen River.
